Our LAST Week at the Boulder Farmer's Market

It looks like this will be our LAST week of garlic sales at the Boulder Farmers Market (unless I have a lot left over after tomorrow). I will list a little bit online for curbside pickup next Sunday (go to boulderfarmers.org for that) and may have some available at my online site weebeefarms.com

It's been a wild year at market and I appreciate all of you who came to support me and all the farmers. You really made it work- and it's been a pleasure seeing all of you come under such strange circumstances!

Now on to planting next year's crop!

The Saturday Boulder Market goes until Nov. 21st.

Thursday, October 1, 2020

Is the market safe to come to?

Many people are just coming to the market for the first time this season, and many of you haven't come yet. I've been asked what the market is like, how crowded it is and does it seem safe. First of all, it does seem safe. The Boulder County health department has imposed VERY strict rules on our operation. Everyone wears masks, and there are strict limits on how many people can be on the street at one time. Customers walk one-way only to keep things spacious.

At my stand there is a barrier to remind folks to keep back. Customers don't touch the garlic - I will get it for you from the bins. Much of it is pre-bagged.  For payment I use a no-contact system by accepting cash that you will put in my "money basket" and I have a stash of money that hasn't been touched for a week to use to give you change. I accept credit cards through Square, and will have you swipe it.

AND the market is still fun to be at! I have more time to talk with customers (sometimes), and there are not big crowds to deal with. The people who come seem very happy to be there and to get fresh farm grown food! It's not a carnival atmosphere, but more food-oriented.

Garlic of the week is Korean Red Hot

"A culinary treasure from Asia. Eaten raw, robust flavor will wake up your mouth!  A superb cooking garlic. Spicy and mellow at first, then with building heat. Will keep until November. "

On KGNU Morning Magazine: John Lehndorrf talks about WeeBee Farms Garlic

Last Thursday local food columnist John Lehndorff said a few nice things about WeeBee Farms Garlic on my favorite local radio station KGNU on the Morning Magazine "Nibbles" program. Here's the link: KGNU Morning Magazine 9/24 "Nibbles" Listen in at 22:30 (22 minutes, 30 seconds after the program starts).

We'll have garlic at Boulder Farmer's Market this Saturday September 12th

Come and get your garlic! The current plan is to be at market the 12th, 19th and 26th. And perhaps October 3rd. See you there...

Garlic in the greenhouse

The garlic was stored in the greenhouse during the storm to protect the bulbs from extreme temperatures. Luckily the low was "only" 28ยบ here and most things did fine. We covered our pepper and tomato gardens, and put a cold frame over our little melon patch. After 2 days of harvesting and covering things in our family gardens it's a relief that we still have some veggies and flowers around. And a bigger relief that the wildfires have calmed down!

The current garlic market news.

We will be at Boulder Farmer's Market and have Chesnok Red, Inchelium red, Amethyst and a few other delectable types in the bins. And lots of variety bags (5 different garlics, color-coded to identify).

Our new garlic for the week is ••Yugoslavian- Both spicy and sweet! Try putting in at the end of stir-frying vegetables or in a quick-cooking sauce. Nutty and smooth when baked. Has a bite when eaten raw. Nice aftertaste. Big, easy to peel cloves! Stores to November.

We have some planting garlic in bags as well , 3 types: Inchelium Red, Chesnok Red and German Extra Hardy.

Selling at Market- schedule and info.

Saturday, August 8th will be our second market with garlic this year.

Garlic "Bargain Bag"
Garlic Bargain Bag

There will be 6 different types of garlic including Chesnok Red, Inchelium Red, Khabar, Shantung Purple, and Tzan ("Mexican Red"). There is a 5-10 bulb limit on many of these since we are just getting started and don't want to sell out in the first hour!

We'll have bargain bags, variety bags and a few jumbo garlics for eating or planting. Looking at the amount of garlic we have at this point I believe we will be at the Boulder Farmers market through September 12th or beyond. Check in here before making a special trip.

And feel free to order from our website for pick-up at the farm or N. Boulder. weebeefarms.com

Garlic Harvest Update

The harvest went well this year. Most of the digging was relatively easy  (except for where the neighbors' cows walked through the field in March and compacted the soil!) and we got finished before the super hot weather. Phew!
Getting the last of the harvest

Putting away the garlic to "cure"

The garlic crop is decent, especially compared to last year (we lost 60% due to a weather event). We did lose some garlic to weather ....again... sigh....  but all in all it's not bad.  Some regular size garlic, lots of smaller garlic and some larger size garlic for planting. The disease problem (white rot) didn't show itself this year, although there are still spores in the soil in the field so all garlic will need to be treated with a hot water soak before planting.
Then plan is to come to Boulder market on August 1st with garlic.

When to buy Tomato plants - Purchase Spring and Summer plants on our new website soon

April 14, 2020
Order your plants from WeeBee Farms Website

Pick-up at our farm, in North Boulder or order through the Boulder Farmers Market bcfm.org for Longmont Sat. Pickup

You may see tomato plants available at local hardware stores and nurseries in April. If they don't look like these, don't buy them! It's WAY too early to get tomato plants here in Boulder County!
WeeBee Farms tomato seedlings on April 14th
Ask any gardener who has grown tomatoes successfully for many years and they will tell you the same thing. We plant them outside May 20- May 30th. If you buy them now and keep them indoors, they will get tall and skinny, and won't be acclimated to being outside at planting time. I see too many tomato plants being ruined from being purchased too early and can't stand the thought of the wasted resources used to produce them- the propane for the greenhouses to grow them, the peat moss in the soil mix, the plastic pot, etc etc.

The exception is if you have "Wall-O-Waters" or "Hot Caps" and know how to use them. Our experience is that you don't get tomatoes from your plants much earlier using these and they are a lot of work to manage successfully.

Tomato Plants from WeeBee Farms-

All are heirlooms that have had good production and flavor at our farm in Boulder County. You may pay and reserve these in advance. Pick-up or delivery will be available May 16th- 30th. Ready to plant at time of delivery.
